NATECLA Webinar: ESOL Teachers: Teaching culture as well as language

“… teachers of a language are also teachers of culture” (Byram, 1989).

  • Title: ESOL Teachers: Teaching culture as well as language
  •  Date: Thursday 16 November 2023
  • Time: 17:00 -18:30
  • Presenters: Daphna Skotnicki
  • Cost: NATECLA members £5, non-members £30

As ESOL teachers, I believe we act as the ‘gateway’ to not only a new language, but also a new culture.  In my interactive webinar we will look at the meaning and significance of culture, and its relationship with language. I will exemplify ways in which we can teach the four language skills in a more culturally aware and sensitive manner.  We will also discuss ideas on how to make our lessons more ‘culturally immersive’, both in and out of the classroom.  Particularly suitable for new ESOL teachers.
