Workshop choices - available for both sessions

The workshops will cover strategies and activities you can immediately use in the ESOL classroom and will include:

  • Jo Gakonga, 101 ways with dictation
Does the thought of dictation carry the whiff of musty classroom with authoritarian teacher for you? if so (and even if not) come along and let me show you that it doesn’t have to be like that at all. Dictation in the language classroom is a great tool for listening practice but can also be used for developing language in a host of other ways and whilst I might not really be able to provide quite as many ideas as the title suggests, there will certainly be plenty for you to take away and use in this very practical session.

  • Tina Boon and Esther Derbyshire, ESOL for Employment - Designing the Curriculum
We will look at how curriculum content can be adapted or enhanced to combine language learning with other IT and 'softer' skills required to make learners more employable and job ready.

  • Joanna Williams, Becoming authors – teaching basic literacy in ESOL classes
This session will focus on activities for teaching language and literacy to emerging readers and writers.   We will consider how to support students with the process of writing; generating ideas, developing language and organising ideas and composing texts. Using visuals, videos from websites, cards and other mediational tools, we will look at strategies and activities to support students to become readers, and authors, of their own texts. We will also look at how to work with mixed levels in Basic Literacy groups.
