Book for the Midlands Day Conference Embedding pronunciation in everyday classroom topics at lower levels, Charlotte Haenlein

Even at low levels, the majority of our learners see pronunciation as a key learning need. Yet teachers often find it difficult to locate simple, jargon-free resources for pronunciation work with learners unfamiliar with the phonemic alphabet (IPA). This encouraged Charlotte to start developing simplified materials based on familiar everyday contexts like ‘House and Home’, 'Friends and Family', ‘Travel and Transport’, ‘Food and Cooking’. You will get ideas for making some simple pronunciation teaching resources, and discuss ways of addressing different learning styles through using visuals, rhythm, movement and environmental print to provide enjoyable multisensory practice and build confidence.

About Charlotte:

Charlotte is an ESOL tutor with 25 years experience in community based ESOL. Her special interests include pronunciation and basic literacy embedded in crafts activities. She was the winner of the Learning + Skills Council's 'Most Imaginative learning Resources' national award (2003) and has published: ‘Family Learning: Keeping Up with the Early Years’ (2004); ‘Living in Britain’ (citizenship resource, 2005). She is currently working on a teacher resource book on 'Pronunciation for Lower Levels'.

Interactive Storytelling in the ESOL Classroom, Sarah Telfer

There is an Indian proverb which states: Tell me a fact and I’ll learn. Tell me a truth and I’ll believe. But tell me a story and it will live in my heart forever. This workshop will explore and demonstrate practical examples of storytelling activities which ESOL teachers can use in their language classrooms to promote the teaching of English in all four skill areas. It will also invite participants to take part in in task-based storytelling activities, involving pair work, small group work and collaborative project work.

About Sarah:

Sarah Telfer is a senior Lecturer in Skills for Life at the University of Bolton. She is currently lecturing on Initial Teacher Training Programmes in Education for the Further Education and Skills sector. Sarah’s special area of academic interest is the use of storytelling as a pedagogic tool to promote interaction in the ESOL and Literacy classroom.

Teaching spelling: some practical ideas, Christine Tudor-Jones
Book for the Midlands Day Conference
If, like me, you have been giving your learners spelling tests, handing out LSCWC (Look, Say, Cover, Write, Check) sheets and personal spelling books for many years, you may also have wondered if these were really doing the trick for your most persistently bad spellers.  You might, like me, have stepped back from devoting much time to teaching spelling because you suspected it was both humdrum and  complicated.   This workshop sets out to share some of the most appealing and effective activities I have discovered and tried out recently - thanks to Johanna Stirling.

About Christine:

Christine has been a member of NATECLA for about fifteen years and has been teaching ESOL for the same length of time.  After 5 torrid years in a primary classroom, she found Birmingham Adult Education ESOL classes, decided this was the place for her, and (kindly sponsored by them) did her CELTA.  She works for the newly merged South and City College Birmingham as a lecturer in ESOL, a CELTA trainer and TLC (Teaching and Learning Coach).   She also does a bit of examining of CELTA courses.  Christine took a short break 2 years ago to do an MA in ELT at Warwick University, which was great. Christine is also an official trainer for NATECLA's new training arm, NATECLA Training.

Bring your lessons to life with virtual reality, Pawel Waluszko and Harinder Chane

Would you like your lessons to come to life? Give your lessons the WOW factor by enhancing your resources through video and the virtual world. This practical workshop will demonstrate various ways of incorporating the latest technology and software in your lessons which you can then apply yourself. It will focus on the use of the Aurasma, an app which magically transforms images and texts into video seen through the hand held device. Create treasure hunts, vocabulary games, interactive tasks and use it for assessment of learning.

About Pawel:

Pawel has been teaching ESOL for 8 years in Birmingham. He currently works at South and City College Birmingham as a Main Grade Lecturer (ESOL). He's always been interested in the use of technology in learning. After gaining his MA in Education (Applied Linguistics), he found interest in incorporating new ways of teaching with interactive resources in order to enhance students' experience in learning.

About Harinder

Harinder has been teaching ESOL for the past 16 years and currently works as an Assistant Director at South and City College Birmingham. She is particularly focused on promoting good and innovative practice within ESOL.  She organised a very successful event called the ESOL Learning Market. This was a student focused event which allowed tutors to experiment with contemporary and engaging methods of teaching and learning.
