This practical programme of workshops, networking opportunities and the chance to explore our resources exhibition will be an unmissable morning of CPD for ESOL practitioners. The event will allow your to choose from the following workshops:

Exploring the Use of Narrative Storytelling and Personal Anecdotes in Language and Literacy skills development, by Sarah Telfer

This workshop is based on educational doctoral research into the use of personal anecdotes as a form of narrative learning, comparing such storytelling activities to forms of narrative encounters which can enhance language and literacy skills development.

The workshop will demonstrate how personal anecdotes can be used as a pedagogic tool to engage ESOL learners in meaningful language practice. It will explore the use of narrative storytelling approaches using personal anecdotes by both the ESOL teacher and the ESOL learner. The workshop will share knowledge, skills, practical ideas and examples of activities which ESOL teachers can use in their language classrooms.

About Sarah

Sarah Telfer is a Senior Lecturer in Skills for Life and a teacher trainer on Initial Teacher Education (ITE) courses at the University of Bolton. She is currently completing her Doctorate in Education and her specialist area of research focus is on the use of narrative storytelling to promote engagement and interaction in the language classroom.


Bringing the outside in, by Sam Shepherd

This workshop will look at ways to bring the learners’ outside lives into the classroom, including visual metaphors and materials, and make use of these in a meaningful and interesting way to generate language which can be exploited as language learning activities. We will look at some practical classroom ideas, as well as how these approaches can be developed to fit in with observation and inspection regimes which may require a more teacher-led, fixed input approach.

About Sam

Sam is an ESOL teacher and teacher trainer working at a college in Yorkshire. As well as technology in teaching and teacher CPD, he has a significant interest in the uses of authentic materials and methods which maximise language development without relying on extensive preparation and materials.


Teaching spelling: some practical ideas, by Christine Tudor-Jones
If, like me, you have been giving your learners spelling tests, handing out LSCWC (Look, Say, Cover, Write, Check) sheets and personal spelling books for many years, you may also have wondered if these were really doing the trick for your most persistently bad spellers.  You might, like me, have stepped back from devoting much time to teaching spelling because you suspected it was both humdrum and  complicated.   This workshop sets out to share some of the most appealing and effective activities I have discovered and tried out recently - thanks to Johanna Stirling.


About Christine:
Christine has been a member of NATECLA for about fifteen years and has been teaching ESOL for the same length of time.  After 5 torrid years in a primary classroom, she found Birmingham Adult Education ESOL classes, decided this was the place for her, and (kindly sponsored by them) did her CELTA.  She works for the newly merged South and City College Birmingham as a lecturer in ESOL, a CELTA trainer and TLC (Teaching and Learning Coach).   She also does a bit of examining of CELTA courses.  Christine took a short break 2 years ago to do an MA in ELT at Warwick University, which was great. Christine is also an official trainer for NATECLA's new training arm, NATECLA Training.
