Keynote speaker: Guilty Secrets of the ELT Classroom, Rachael Roberts

Guilty secrets of English Language teachingWe all have them, those guilty secrets. Things we do in class that we might not want an observer to catch us doing! For example, getting students to read aloud, letting students use their first languages, or feeling that we have too much 'teacher talking time'.

In this workshop we will look at some these ‘guilty secrets’ and consider the evidence for or against the practice. What does research have to tell us? Do we really have anything to feel guilty about? A chance to confess, explore and consider our practice.

About Rachael

Guilty Secrets of the ELT classroomSince 1989, Rachael has worked as a teacher, teacher trainer and materials writer in both ELT and ESOL contexts. She started her career abroad, in Portugal, Brazil and Poland, then returned to the UK, where she spent ten years at Solihull College, before becoming a tutor on the ESOL Level 5 qualification at Warwick University. Currently Rachael spends most of her time writing teaching materials and has co-written and number of well known course books include Total English Intermediate and Real Life Advanced, but still teaches from time to time at Warwickshire College. She is one of NATECLA's official trainers through our training arm and spends rather too much time on Twitter (@teflerinha) and on her website, www.elt-resourceful.com. writing posts on different aspects of materials writing and teaching .

Further information about the event - including workshop choices - will follow soon.

Workshops

WORKSHOP 1

  • Title: CALL* to action (Taking a technology-enhanced approach to ESOL)
  • Presenter: Kenji Lamb, Digital Advisor, College Development Network
Description:
I like a bit of digital – there you go, I’ve said it, there’s no taking that back. Over the years, I’ve employed a range of ‘technology-enhanced’ approaches in my teaching, some successful and some not so much. So, come along to my session and I’ll share what I’ve learned; (free) tools and techniques I’ve used with my own students along with ideas and tips I’ve picked up along the way.

WORKSHOP 2

  • Title: ESOL: Preparation for Literacy
  • Presenter: Jill Murray:  Principal Verifier for National Qualifications in ESOL, SQA (Scottish Qualifications Authority)

Description:

This workshop will look at how to assess the skills needed for learners to develop their literacy in English at a very basic level.  The ESOL: Preparation for Literacy Unit was developed to enable learners who have little or no previous knowledge of English, and low or no literacy in their first language, to acquire very basic English language skills. We will look at some of the outcomes of this unit but will mainly focus on what learning and teaching materials are available for this level and how assessment may take place naturally in the classroom.

WORKSHOP 3

  • Title: Pronunciation Pick & Mix
  • Presenter: Amanda Avison, ESOL lecturer at Dundee and Angus College

Do you integrate pronunciation into your teaching? Do you ever set it for homework?
Join us for some practical ideas on how to add more pronunciation into your classroom.

Amanda Avison is an ESOL lecturer at Dundee and Angus College, Amanda has a keen interest in incorporating pronunciation into her teaching in a variety of ways. This was the subject of her Trinity Diploma project and continues to be an area for personal development with the result that last year she developed a new course for teaching English pronunciation to Spanish speakers. She is a member of IATEFL's PRONSIG group.

WORKSHOP 4

  • Title: Supporting volunteers to adapt materials
  • Presenters: Helena Porrelli and Kristen Fraley, The Glasgow ESOL Forum
Glasgow ESOL Forum's Volunteer Tutor Project has been supporting volunteers to deliver ESOL tuition to refugees, asylum seekers and BME communities since 2004. Our volunteers work with small groups and individual adult ESOL learners. Project development workers support them in finding appropriate materials and reflecting on their practice, as well as providing relevant training.

In this workshop, we will share practical tips on supporting volunteers to adapt materials so they are suitable for the learners they are working with.
