Workshop details

WORKSHOP 1: Michael Pal - Teaching phonics to low levels

This workshop, led by a very experienced pre-entry teacher, will give you practical ideas to use both inside and outside the classroom. Utilising a phonemic and phonetic approach, which complements methods used in the Primary National Curriculum, Michael will explore the complex sound-spelling challenges which can arise in teaching English to pre-entry learners who come from low literacy levels in both their native language and English. His activities are based on the ethos of building the overall confidence of pre-entry learners and encouraging collaborative learning.

About Michael

Michael is an experienced ESOL/EFL teacher of 12 years, with an MA in English Language Teaching, and is an Assessor/Mentor for students on the PGDL TESOL at Bolton University. He has taught in UK Adult Education, Community Education, and prison contexts (HMP Styal and Manchester).

WORKSHOP 2: Embedding employability skills into ESOL classes

The workshop is a result of my professional interest in teaching employability skills as well as an on-going classroom-based research project. It is full of practical tips on how to explicitly teach/embed hard (CVs, Interviews, etc.) and soft (teamwork, communication, etc.) employability skills in general English ESOL classes. All of the ideas have been tried out by my colleagues and evaluated by the students. The workshop itself will be fun, interactive and hopefully very informative.

About Ania

Ania is ESOL teacher, currently working at Leeds City College; experienced in designing and delivering mainstream, community and Jobcentre-mandated ESOL classes; professional interests include  employability skills, first language interference and creative grammar teaching.

Sponsor bannerWORKSHOP 3: Kathryn Aldridge Morris - Creative Writing for Wellbeing and personal development

Unwind during this event and pamper yourself with poetry and wordplay. Discover how creative writing can be a useful tool for ESOL teachers, working in stressful contexts but without the support or supervision that other ‘helping professions’ have. Learn how writing can help with issues such as those that may arise when you work in isolation, managing relationships at work, or dealing with stress or anxiety. We’ll try out a selection of fun, free-writing tasks and explore their potential for our wellbeing and personal development.

About Kathryn

Kathryn Aldridge-Morris is a writer and teacher trainer and has a post grad qualification specialising in arts interventions in mental health. She was a project coordinator for the British Council’s ESOL Nexus project, and is the author of many ELT resources, including ‘How to Write ESOL Materials’ (2015, ELT Teacher2Writer). Her latest course books, Build Up to Headway Pre-Intermediate and Intermediate (OUP) are published in 2018.
