Scottish Qualifications Authority (SQA) is developing a PDA in English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL) Tutoring, as recommended by the Scottish Government in the Adult ESOL Strategy for Scotland. The award will be a qualification (set at SCQF 6/7), providing a first step in the career of ESOL teachers and tutors in Scotland and is aimed primarily at people who have no ESOL specific teaching qualifications. At this stage of the development preliminary research is being conducted, and questionnaires have been produced to survey those delivering and providing ESOL in Scotland. The purpose of this survey is: - to better understand the training needs of those working with ESOL learners. - to gauge the nature of ESOL teaching in Scotland and the existing qualifications that people have. There are 2 questionnaires: one for managers/coordinators and one for tutors. For the purpose of the survey tutor and tutoring are used in a generic sense to cover all those who deliver ESOL. The aim is to include the views of support workers, tutors, teachers and lecturers. It is envisaged that a wide range of organisations in the Voluntary, School, Further Education and Community based sectors who provide ESOL in its many forms, will take part. The surveys can be accessed and completed online at http://www.sqa.org.uk/pdaesol by 2nd November 2007. If preferred, a paper-based version of each questionnaire is available via the contact below, and can be photocopied.
